Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about secure private transactions.

Is Handshake Exchange safe?
Yes, we are powered by Escrow.com, the world's most secure payment system. Funds are held in a secure trust account and only released when the buyer confirms satisfaction.
How long does a transaction take?
A transaction can be started in minutes. The duration depends on the inspection period agreed upon by the buyer and seller, which is usually 1-7 days after item receipt.
What happens if there's a dispute?
If the buyer is unsatisfied or the seller claims an item was returned damaged, our dispute resolution team reviews the evidence and makes an impartial decision based on the contract terms.
Can I use Handshake for international deals?
Yes, we support transactions in over 50 countries and multiple currencies. International wire transfer fees may apply.
What can I use Handshake Exchange for?
Three things: (1) Escrow transactions for buying/selling items like cars, electronics, watches, and domains. (2) Service contracts for hiring contractors, freelancers, repair work, or inspections — funds are held until the work is approved. (3) eSign agreements for handshake deals that don't involve money — just a signed agreement between two parties.
What payment methods are accepted?
We accept Credit Card, PayPal, and Wire Transfer/ACH. Credit Card and PayPal are available up to $5,000 per transaction and carry a 3.05% processing surcharge. Limits may increase based on your transaction history. Wire Transfer/ACH has no surcharge and no limit — ideal for high-value deals like vehicles and luxury items.
What happens if a transaction is cancelled? Are fees refundable?
If a transaction is cancelled or partially refunded, funds are returned to the original payment method. The escrow fee is non-refundable. For wire transfer refunds, there is a $10 fee for domestic wires and $20 for international wires. Credit Card and PayPal refunds are returned at no additional charge.
How does the eSign feature work?
eSign lets you create a simple handshake agreement between two parties — no money involved. Enter the agreement title, terms, and the other party's email. They receive a link to review and sign. Both parties get a timestamped record of the agreement. It's free to use.
Can I use Handshake for contractor or freelance work?
Yes! Choose 'Service Contract' when starting a deal. You set the scope of work, contract amount, and an approval period. The client funds the escrow, the provider completes the work, and the client has the approval period to review before funds are released. Great for renovations, repairs, inspections, and freelance projects.
